Q1. What happens if I am involved in an accident with someone who is uninsured or has less insurance than I do?

A1. Your own policy provides uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage if you are injured in an accident caused by a driver who is uninsured or has less insurance. N.J.S.A. 17:28-1.1.

Q2. What is uninsured motorist coverage?

A2. Uninsured motorist coverage permits you to recover monetary damages from your own insurance company that you would have been legally entitled to recover from an uninsured driver.

Q3. What is underinsured motorist coverage?

A3. Underinsured motorist coverage permits you to recover monetary damages from your own insurance company that you would have been legally entitled to recover from a driver who has less insurance coverage than you do.

Q4. Who is entitled to receive uninsured/underinsured motorists benefits under my policy?

A4. Your insurance policy provides uninsured/underinsured motorists benefits to you, family members who reside with you and occupants in your automobile.

Q5. How much uninsured motorist coverage is required?

A5. The law of the State of New Jersey requires every automobile insurance policy to provide uninsured motorist coverage with minimum limits of $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident.

Q6. Can I purchase higher limits of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage?

A6. Yes.  You can purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage with split limits up to $250,000 per person/$500,000 per accident or a single limit of $500,000 (not to exceed your liability limits).

Q7. How much uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage do you recommend?

A7. Most people feel that uninsured  motorist coverage of $15/30,000 is not adequate to protect themselves if they are injured in an accident with a driver who is uninsured.  Many people purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage with a single limit of $100,000 or split limits of $100/300,000. I recommend that you purchase uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage with a single limit of $500,000.
